The Others is a film that was directed by Alejandro Amenabar and was the first English spoken film to with Best Film at the Spanish National Film Awards, the Goyas. The film stars the beautiful Nicole Kidman as Grace Stewart, the mother of two small children. Kidman actually won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Grace Stewart.

The film takes place not long after the end of World War 2. The main setting of the film is the country home that Grace Stewart lives in with her two children Anne and Nicholas. Her husband Charles has been off fighting in the war and has yet to return. The children have a rare disease that requires them to stay out of the sunlight, and this becomes a key factor in the film.

On the offset of the film there are three servants who come to the home, a nanny Mrs. Bertha Mills, a Gardner named Mr. Tuttle and lastly a girl named Lydia. Strange events begin to take place around the house and this scares a very Catholic Grace Stewart. Her daughter Anne goes as far as to draw a family portrait of four people including a boy named Victor.

The film has some great moments of fright and fear that let you use your imagination and just the actors faces to show you the fear. One of these great moments is one in which we see Grace try to get into a room where a piano is playing but no one should be in the room. Things escalate to the point she is knocked to the floor and begins screaming for Mrs. Mills.

Another brilliant scene is after scolding her daughter Grace has had enough and goes for a priest to bless the house. She goes out into a fog to find a local priest but the thing is she’s not alone out in the fog. She comes across someone in this fog and brings the person home.

As you watch the film, you also get a sense that the servants have an idea of what is going on they are seen at times talking to each other. They drop hints of what could be going on through certain phrases. There is also a point in the film where they are seen covering up three gravestones with fallen leaves.

The daughter Anne seems to be the biggest protagonist to her mother, Grace. She is the one who brings up the discussion of ghosts. There is even a point in the film where Grace mistakenly attacks her daughter Anne. There is even some foreshadowing done with Anne as she alludes to a pure moment of horror to the kids when they awake to find the much needed curtains gone.

The Others is filled with moments that will shock you and at the same time make you question what could be going on in the film. Is the house really haunted or is there something incredibly evil going on, or is Grace just going insane. You get the sense at times that Grace does truly love her children but at times also finds them as a hindrance. The house itself at times can be seen also as an evil to Grace and adds another potential cause to her problems.

The look of this film is just amazing and Nicole Kidman’s acting is just unbelievable in this role. You completely buy her portrayal of Grace and just the way she was able to portray the fear and loathing through a look on her face added so much to the film. Her looks helped to sell some of the scariest moments of the film. The lack of music and other signals to get you to expect a moment of terror was coming was just brilliantly done and adds so much to the viewing of this film.

The great thing about this film is that it gets into your head and makes you think. The film engages your imagination and draws you in as you start to solve the problems for Grace hoping that whatever is going on will come to fruition. The thing is you have to see the film all the way to the end to see the resolution and what exactly is going on in this house. I say that because I for one will not spoil the ending as you must see this movie.
