Zombieland for me is up there with those Horror Comedy movies like Shaun of the Dead. The film stars Woody Harrelson as Tallahassee, Jesse Eisenberg as Columbus, and Emma Stone as Wichita and Abigail Breslin as Little Rock.
The movie has a great movie opening sequence which has the viewer being introduced to the world of Zombieland. The character of Columbus does the narration for us and at the same time introduces us to his List of Rules in surviving in Zombieland. Some of the gags used in this opening sequence are just great and will get a laugh out of many. One great gag is rule 1 which is the importance of Cardio.
We finally get introduced to Columbus as he’s at a Gas Station getting gas for the vehicle he is currently using. We are shown again how important his rules are and eventually Columbus is seen continuing on his journey when he finally gets introduced to Harrelson’s character of Tallahassee.
The character of Tallahassee is one that is there for not only a lot of great comedic lines but also to show us the fun that can be had killing Zombies. The main issue with Tallahassee is his consistent urge to risk his life to find the ever elusive Twinkie. Tallahassee even goes out of his way to point out to us that contrary to public believe, “Twinkies have expiration dates.”
It’s in one of these Twinkie searching moments that we get introduced to the 2 other main characters of the cast. This would be the characters of Wichita and Litle Rock who manage to get the boys to turn over their weapons and ride over to the girls. The girls take off heading to the Pacific Playland Park where they believe it to be Zombie free. This leaves Columbus and Tallahassee to try and do whatever they can to catch up with the girls.
The movie continuously progresses and there are some great additional comedic scenes scattered throughout the movie. At times as the characters travel we get a glimpse into their life pre-zombie outbreak and these help add some great back story to the characters. Columbus being the main character does get a bit more of this type of attention but it does help to explain his character and why he has survived.
The movie does have some elements of gore as there is of course times when we get to see Zombies eating those unfortunate people they where able to catch. There are also plenty of Zombie kills that may not be so bloody but at times just funny. A great example is the one seen in commercials featuring the “Zombie Kill of the Week” with the piano following on the Zombie.
Overall this is a great movie and has some great jokes and one-liners that will keep you laughing. There is also just enough Zombie flesh eating to satisfy those who are looking to see a Zombie film. Woody Harrelson returns to his comedic roots in this film and his portrayal of Tallahassee is just great and fits him perfectly. The cameo by Bill Murray is also very refreshing and it was great to see Murray in this film.
If you happen to find time over this summer movie period to see this movie I’d certainly try and see it in the theatres. If you find you don’t have the time or are one who waits for DVD then add this to your wish list for when it’s released. This is a great movie and surely worth a watch.
